In these studies I have used ink on paper. Different papers respond in different ways. At first, I enjoyed the absorbent nature of heavy, handmade paper, the way I was able to create depth in the layers of inky blackness, the strength of the paper allowing me to play that dark off against the remaining white. In other pieces I have worked on glossy, non- absorbent paper. I like the manner in which the ink could be pushed around on its surface; wiped, smeared, smudged and stained. The pen drawing on top became freer and less descriptive. The photographic paper, in particular, seemed to resist too much control........I have become intrigued by the role of the medium in creating metaphors.....Bursary Statement 2011
